Horribly OT: Anybody playing Sega's Phantasy Star

Sorry for being way OT here (well, OK, my characters are Darkholme the ranger and Nyte the hunter - so it's at least marginally NC related)...but does anyone with a Dreamcast play Phantasy Star Online V2.0? I'm trying to find people to meet up with online, but I'd rather not go through the regular routes of video game message boards, as most of the people there tend to be, well, gamers. And I'm just not that hardcore.

If not, I'm sure this message will quickly drop down the board...

(No, I never played the game. And you're right, hard-core gamers are disturbing. I like to hang around gaming forums and hit on/annoy them, though. Hours of entertainment. Try it sometime. Well, you might have to pretend to be a different gender but... what was I saying again?)

Phantasy Star Online is basically an RPG that's a bit like Diablo, a bit like Doom or Quake. You get to design your character from 9 different characters (3 professions - ranger, force, and hunter - and 3 races - human, newman, and android). For example, my character Darkholme is a RAmar, or a human ranger. He basically looks like me, except I don't have the goatee anymore, and he's got dark blue hair (I wonder why...). But you can adjust the height and build of the character, and choose the outfit (Darkholme wears blue and grey battle armor).

In a bit of a departure from the standard RPG though, you have the main game, and side quests you can go on to build XP and gain special items. And you can do them either offline or go online and join up with up to three other players. Your character builds throughout all of these, so anything you do offline carries on to the online portion.

It's a nice diversion, and I've really enjoyed the new version (which if you don't have the first one, it has everything on there plus new stuff, so don't bother getting the first one). The only downside is that they switched to a pay to play format, but it's only $5/month for unlimited play, so it's not too bad.

I don't have a Dreamcast, darnit. Otherwise I would check it out. But I didn't like Doom or Quake.

Anyone want to adopt a Neopet? I just checked on him. He's still there and he's "delighted!" (even though he's also "dying".) Steel-plated, great speed, immense strength.



Quite the resemblance to our hero, eh?
